Run Proud
He taught me to run high on my toes. I will always remember his words: run proud & remember you are alive.
Ruler of the Universe
Doesn’t really matter who wins this race because they just do it again anyway.
Rude Noises
You keep making noises like that, she told him, & pretty soon people will stop talking to you & after awhile all the kids were over there trying to learn how to do it, too.
Roughage
I used to eat popcorn for every meal, she told me once. It made me feel like I was in the movies & my life would turn out happy in the end. Did it work? I said. I don’t know, she said, but I like to think the roughage counts for something.
Road Trip
A box full of fantasies you have to be away from town to use
Right Tool
My dad always told me, the right tool for the right job, but all he ever had around were a few screwdrivers, so he ended up using the telephone a lot.
Right Practice
It’s hard to say the right words without practice, I said & she whispered in my ear, Say them as many times as you like & we practiced late into the night.
Right Hand Turns
plans her route so she only has to make right hand turns so she never has to stop
Right Answer
What would it take for world peace? I said. Is there a right answer? he said. No, I said. Oh good, he said. I thought this was going to be one of your love-your-little-brother talks.
Right Accessory
Sometimes you just need the right accessory, she said & I said I know, sometimes it takes me an hour to pick the right head & she just ignored me.
Riding the Pony
When I was younger, my favorite thing was riding the pony outside the Safeway. My dad always said I should save my money for something better, but I could ride for miles all over the West & always end up back at the Safeway & all it cost was a quarter & I still can’t think of anything better than that.
Riding Home
You may not remember the time you let me go first. Or the time you dropped back to tell me it wasn’t that far to go. Or the time you waited at the crossroads for me to catch up. You may not remember any of those, but I do & this is what I have to say to you: today, no matter what it takes, we ride home together.
Respect for Danger
If this ever gets off the ground, he said, it’ll probably be really dangerous & maybe I’ll finally get the respect I deserve
Reserve Judgment
I used to live for the day, she said, before I moved to Minnesota.
Now, I check the temperature before I do anything.
Reminder
I don’t think about sex as much as I used to, I said. But all it takes is a little reminder. Like what? she said. You name it, I said & I knew instantly I had lost all credibility.
Remembering
You have to remember to make it all over again every day, the angel said to me. Otherwise it goes all to hell.
Relaxed Fit
This is a loose-fitting body, so it’s still comfortable after a long carbohydrate binge.
Relative Worries
I’m not worried about ghosts in general, she said. Just the ones that are related to me.
Regular Life
Of course I want to save the world, she said, but I was hoping to do it from the comfort of my regular life.
Regular Hours
wondering if Day of the Dead is nine to five like all the other dead days he can remember
