Dreams

Fighting Chance

What do I get for this? I said & the angel gave me a catalog filled with toasters & clock radios & a basketball signed by Michael Jordan & I said, But this is just stuff & the angel smiled at me & swallowed me in her arms. I’m so glad you said that, she whispered to me. I knew you still had a chance.

Face the Day

My eyes only see stuff I believe in already, she said. I couldn’t face the day otherwise.

Fair Trade

I’ll bet you do something important, he said & I said the most important thing was watching while he slept & he said he’d do the same for me someday & we shook hands & decided it was a fair trade.

Fashion Angel

these are multi-purpose wings & when she’s not flying they accessorize nicely with almost anything she wears

Fast Forward

Fast forwarding through her messages hoping to hear from old boyfriends who finally realize the treasure they’ve thrown away.

Different Plans

I don’t know how long I can do this, he said. I think the universe has different plans for me & we sat there in silence & I thought to myself that this is the thing we all come to & this is the thing we all fight & if we are lucky enough to lose, our lives become beautiful with mystery again & I sat there silent because that is not something that can be said.

Decisions

This is a bag filled with dreams & recipes for soup & he’s deciding right now which he’s really hungry for.

Deep Roots

When I die, she said, I’m coming back as a tree with deep roots & I’ll wave my leaves at the children every morning on their way to school & whisper tree songs at night in their dreams. Trees with deep roots know about the things children need.

Dark Eyes

Standing in the twilight watching the world with soft dark eyes.

Dark Night

Counted up all the things she was afraid of one night & it took so long she fell asleep from exhaustion

Country Dance

One summer we visited my grandparents, I remember we went to a dance in the country. The band was loud & enthusiastic & there were so many people my glasses got steamed up. After a while, the band stopped for a drink & my ears were still ringing & I looked up & there were strings of white lights scattered like stars all over the ceiling & I wondered if it was this bright out in space where there were no people & then the band started playing another polka & the quiet slipped out to the front porch with all the other old guys.

Crossing the Line

I have too much to lose, she said, if I cross that line. Like what? I said. She could not think of anything that day so she said she’d get back to me. Since then I’ve been thinking what I would lose if I cross my line & I haven’t come up with anything either. There’s always another line somewhere.

Close To The Ground

I still fly a lot in my dreams, she told us,
but I try to stay close to the ground. At my age,
a fall can be pretty serious.

Bird Dreams

In her dream, she said, she was a bird who fell asleep & dreamed she was a man who wore bright colors & treated women poorly & she asked all the other birds what it could mean & they all thought it was something in the air & everyone agreed how lucky they were to be birds & not men.

Birth Secret

In my dream, he told me to hold the secret of his birth safe & teach him when he forgot.

Big Strange Family

I don’t think of it as working for world peace, he said. I think of it as just trying to get along in a really big strange family.

Big Strange Family (feminine)

I don’t think of it as working for world peace, she said. I think of it as just trying to get along in a really big strange family.

Better Trap

trapped mainly by wanting things to be exactly as they are,
only better

Ballerina Mom

Whenever she stood in line at the bank, or while waiting for the bus, I noticed her feet. The right always in front & perpendicular to the left just so. Even after 2 children, she still dreamed of being a dancer.

Beginning

he followed the sun & she followed the stars & in dreams they listened closely for the beginning of all things, for that was where they knew they’d find each other
