Secret Notes

He wrote secret notes to people he hadn’t met yet. Some of them aren’t even born, he said, but we live in a strange neighborhood & they will need help figuring things out & I won’t always be around to explain it to them.

Science Bits

this is filled with bits of stuff he learned in science class

Scraps of Magic

These are little scraps of magic & when you paste them together you get a memory of something fine & strong, she said. Sometimes it takes till you’re 40 to see it though.

Scent

When she wore the hat, even many years later, she could always smell her mother’s perfume & it was hard to remember she was supposed to be alone.

Running Behind

When I met the Grandfather of Time, he said it was no use struggling. Even after all these years he still had too much to do.

Right Practice

It’s hard to say the right words without practice, I said & she whispered in my ear, Say them as many times as you like & we practiced late into the night.

Realist

I don’t wear stuff to impress people, she said. I can’t afford it yet.

Relative Worries

I’m not worried about ghosts in general, she said. Just the ones that are related to me.

Real Name

I can remember walking down the street, saying my name over & over, until all of a sudden, it didn’t sound like my name anymore. It didn’t even sound like a word at all & then I stopped & the silence rushed in & whispered words that sounded more like my real name & I smiled & thought to myself how surprised my parents would be when they found out what a mistake they had made.

Real Reason

There are things you do because they feel right & they may make no sense & they may make no money & it may be the real reason we are here: to love each other & to eat each other’s cooking & say it was good.

Re-set Button (masculine)

he discovered his re-set button early on & there were not many things that bothered him all the rest of his days just because of that

Real Dream

This holds a promise to all the children of the world, which is how you can tell it’s a real dream of America & not one of those dreams of fear & death that glitter so brightly on tv.

Quiet Spaces

We had gone far enough together to listen easily in the quiet spaces.

Quiet Pride (No Gender)

There has never been a day when I have not been proud of you, I said, though some days I’m louder about other stuff so it’s easy to miss that.

Quiet Pride (daughter)

There has never been a day when I have not been proud of you, I said to my daughter, though some days I’m louder about other stuff so it’s easy to miss that.

Quiet Pride (son)

There has never been a day when I have not been proud of you, I said to my son, though some days I’m louder about other stuff so it’s easy to miss that.

Quiet Prayer

As long as the sun shall rise goes the old lovers vow. But we are children of a scientific age & have no time for poetry. Still, I offer a quiet prayer of thanks for the sunlight each time I see your face.

Queen of the Universe

I used to hate birthdays, she told me, until I figured out I was the Queen of the Universe & now I do them for the little people.

Psychology

Of course I’m not happy, she said to me, but I’ve got a degree in psychology so at least I can explain why.

Purple Madonna

One time on Hollywood Boulevard I saw a young girl with a baby. It was a crisp winter morning & her hair shone dark purple in the sun. She was panhandling outside the Holiday Inn & the door clerk came out & told her to be on her way & I wondered if anyone would recognize the Christ child if they happened to meet. I remember thinking it’s not like there are any published pictures & purple seemed like a good color for a Madonna so I gave her a dollar just in case.
