Casual Chic

Ready for just about anything in a casual chic sort of way.

Center on Wheels

I spent a long time trying to find my center until I looked closely one night &
found it had wheels & moved easily in the slightest breeze, so now I spend less
time sitting and more time sailing.

Broken Down

this is a machine that’s supposed to make people good &
true & kind & the funny thing is that it works best
when it’s completely broken down so everyone has to stop what
they’re doing & get together & figure out how to fix it.

Blue Squares

We lay there & looked up at the night sky &
she told me about stars called blue squares & red swirls &
I told her I’d never heard of them. Of course not, she said,
the really important stuff they never tell you.
You have to imagine it on your own.

Bittersweet

She said she usually cried at least once each day not because she was sad, but because the world was so beautiful & life was so short.

Bigger Shoes

When I was young, I used to wear my father’s shoes & stomp around, making the world a better place for us all & today I see I’m not the only one who did that & those shoes aren’t anywhere big enough for who we are now.

Best of Times

I’d like to leave you with something valuable, she said. You probably already have, I said, but we take most of our lives to remember that, even in the best of times

Better Trap

trapped mainly by wanting things to be exactly as they are,
only better

Being There

sending postcards to himself saying ‘Wish you were here’
so when he gets back home he doesn’t forget

Beautiful People

I have a friend who reads people’s auras. He sees all sorts of colors like green & red & purple. He says anyone can do it. All it takes is forgetting everything you think you know & just looking. I’ve tried it & even though I haven’t seen any colors yet, everyone I meet looks so beautiful when I stop knowing everything, that it’s pretty hard to go back to the old way.

Before Dawn

I’ve always liked the time before dawn because there’s no one around to remind me who I’m supposed to be, so it’s easier to remember who I am

Beginning

he followed the sun & she followed the stars & in dreams they listened closely for the beginning of all things, for that was where they knew they’d find each other

Back to Nature

We went camping once & the people next to us had a TV & they invited us over to watch the Miss America pageant & everyone said isn’t nature wonderful & after a while I went over to the dunes & watched the waves smile brightly in the moonlight.

Balancing Act

I have a friend who used to ride bareback in a circus. In one picture I’ve seen she is wearing blue sequins with her smile spread wide as her arms. One time I asked her was it hard to balance? No, she said, you always balance. Only sometimes, she added, you balance on your butt.

Angel Butt

I’ll bet even an angel’s butt itches if he has to do too much sitting on hard places.

Angel of Dreams

Every night for a hundred years the angel of dreams came to the town & splashed the walls with bright colors that stayed until the first light of day.

Angels of Mercy

Most people don’t know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don’t get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.

Awakening

In those days, we finally chose to walk like giants
& hold the world in arms grown strong with love
& there may be many things we forget in the days
to come, but this will not be one of them.

Ancient Kings

My grandmother kept a box of old photos in her attic & we used to go up there on rainy days & sit on the floor in the dusty light & go through them & she would tell about witches & broken hearts & how we came from royal blood & it was all there in the pictures, she said & then we’d lose the light & we’d all go downstairs for dinner & in our secret hearts we sat taller knowing once we had ruled the world.

Ancient Songs

That was the day the ancient songs of blood & war spilled from a hole in the sky & there was a long moment as we listened & fell silent in our grief & then one by one, we stood tall & came together & began to sing of life & love & all that is good & true & I will never forget that day when the ancient songs died because there was no one in the world to sing them.
