There is a way up toward the better world we have seen in our dreams, but these stairs won’t build themselves.
when you were most needed
and held the ground steady
in your quiet way.
For us, there is no question,
we could never have made it this far
Real Hero (fem)
Anyone can slay a dragon, she told me, but try waking up every morning & loving the world all over again. That’s what takes a real hero.
The best teachers
are the ones
who show you
how to use
This is the
kind of love
that just keeps
I am proud to see
the one you are,
and the one
you are becoming.
It is no small thing,
this chance I have
to walk the road
There are invisible lines
connecting everything together,
and I am particularly fond of
the one that connects me to you.
Nothing More (remix)
If there is any secret to this life I live, this is it: the sound of what cannot be seen sings within everything that can. & there is nothing more to it than that.
Real Hero (no gender)
Anyone can slay a dragon, but try waking up every morning & loving the world all over again. That’s what takes a real hero.
I have a friend who took all the doors out of his house one summer. It reminds me there’s nothing I have that’s worth hiding, he said. No secrets is the key to world peace. He put them all back on that winter. I decided it was peaceful enough for me, he said.
I bet we could all live in peace for a long time, as long as everyone stayed out of my way, she said. I’d hate to be the one to ruin it.
I would like to think more about baseball & small engines & the best weedkiller known to man, but I always end up watching the ants on my back porch, thinking we’re not so different after all.
They came to sit & dangle their feet off the edge of the world & after awhile they forgot everything but the good & true things they would do someday.
Too Much Beauty
I have heard too much beauty to ever go back, he said & in that moment, I knew there was no way the children of our world would fail.
There are moments when I’m completely at peace, but it’s usually before my children wake up & they’ll have none of that.
I asked her why she never told us about the Ten Commandments & she said she wasn’t ever that good with numbers so she loved everything as best she could & I remember thinking who needs all those rules anyway with a mother like her around.
She asked me if I had kids & when I said I did she said make sure you teach them what’s right. & I said how will I know? & she nodded & said, good point, just don’t teach them any obvious wrong then.
Teeth in a Box
These are teeth in a box & it swallows up all the mean things in the world & holds them in its jaws until times start to change.
These are all the street signs for this area but he keeps moving them around at night so the only people who aren’t lost all the time are the children who never pay attention to signs anyway.
This is a box filled with the sorrow of all the people who have been forgotten & some day it will wash the world clean.
