Free Country (aka Confusing World)

Why is the world so confusing? he said & I said it’s only confusing if you believe it has to make sense & he looked at me & shook his head.
I can’t believe they let just anyone have children, he said.

Flying Naked With Jesus

When I was younger, I used to fly a lot in my dreams. I used to dream I was naked too. My grandma said it was all because of original sin & that if I lived a pure life that someday I would be able to fly naked with Jesus & then she looked at me & said many are called, but few are chosen & later on I thought it was a damn good thing too & I gave up pure living for a long time after that just to be sure.

Final Reward

Finally realizes that all the chaos is what makes tea worth it.

Flexible Practice

I was thinking of either meditating or napping, but the way I do it, there’s not much difference except in the explanation to the rest of my family.

Flight

I knew a man in college who grew up in the inner city of Chicago & what he was doing in Iowa I never did figure out. But whenever he would see a jet trailing across the sky, he would stop everything he was doing & he would watch. Once, after a jet was gone & there was nothing left but the white line disappearing like a scar into the blue, he turned to me & said, An airplane is a miracle & I didn’t give it much thought, but now & then, when I am ready to give up hope for human beings in general, & for one or two of them who are bugging me specifically, I will look to the sky & there will be one of those miracles & I will remember it’s all about concentrating on the right thing.

Fighting Chance

What do I get for this? I said & the angel gave me a catalog filled with toasters & clock radios & a basketball signed by Michael Jordan & I said, But this is just stuff & the angel smiled at me & swallowed me in her arms. I’m so glad you said that, she whispered to me. I knew you still had a chance.

Face the Day

My eyes only see stuff I believe in already, she said. I couldn’t face the day otherwise.

Eternal Life

She asked me how I felt about eternal life & I said, would I have the same aches & pains I have now because that would factor heavily into my decision.

Eternal Reward

Of course I believe in heaven, my grandma used to say. There’s got to be some reward for living with your grandfather for all these years.

Exact Centers

This is one of the exact centers of the universe & it’s in charge of a lot of the beautiful & amazing things we’ll take for granted in the future.

Deep Roots

When I die, she said, I’m coming back as a tree with deep roots & I’ll wave my leaves at the children every morning on their way to school & whisper tree songs at night in their dreams. Trees with deep roots know about the things children need.

Dark Garden

I once had a garden filled with flowers that grew only on dark thoughts but they need constant attention & one day I decided I had better things to do.

Connection

there came a moment in the middle of the song
when he suddenly felt every heartbeat in the room
& after that he never forgot he was part
of something much bigger

Connection (feminine)

there came a moment in the middle of the song
when she suddenly felt every heartbeat in the room
& after that she never forgot she was part
of something much bigger

Connection (we)

there came a moment in the middle of the song
when we suddenly felt every heartbeat in the room
& after that we never forgot we were part
of something much bigger

Closet Angel

There are angels everywhere you can imagine.
I saw one hiding in the closet in our bedroom once
& I invited her out, but she said she was waiting
for a friend thank you just the same & next time
I looked she was gone.

Color Blind

What color are souls? she said &
I said, Color isn’t that much of an issue
when you’re talking souls.

Bones of Light

I remember we sat in the swing on the front porch & as the dusk came on us like a song, dark throated & sweet, he told me about the beginning when we had bones of light & hair that burned like the sun & I asked what happened then? & I felt him floating there in the soft dark & finally he said we forgot & I said I never would, but sometimes I do & I understand now why he put his arm around me & said nothing more.

Bittersweet

She said she usually cried at least once each day not because she was sad, but because the world was so beautiful & life was so short.

Blackbird

I watched the pellet leave the gun. It was like a big black fly & it landed on the blackbird’s wing & suddenly there was a single drop of bright bright red & the voices of the world seemed farther away & I knew I could never do that again. The sounds of the other birds stopped for a moment as its song flew out to all the corners of the world & I hoped that someday I would be remembered that way.
