doorway that only lets some stuff through but you never know what it’s going to choose, so it’s hard to plan for the future
Every weekend, she went to the city & looked through the bones of the dead for old clothes & bits of fashion jewelry. She always seemed a bit tattered, but I didn’t say much about it. I was still young & hadn’t settled on a past I was comfortable with yet either.
I had vegetarians in my past, she said, but they’re gone now and I’m a lot happier.
I’d probably have more trouble with the ghosts of the past, she said, if my memory wasn’t shot to hell.
Anybody can make up past lives, she said. The real trick is to make up future lives & not forget you did it.
In those days, we finally chose to walk like giants & hold the world in arms grown strong with love & there may be many things we forget in the days to come, but this will not be one of them.
